Sakura Kaiten-Sushi is an authentic sushi-train restaurant serving up market fresh fish prepared by highly skilled chefs. With the launch of their new location in Wesley Place Building in Melbourne CBD, Sakura needed a new brand identity to realign with the vision for the growing business.
Inspired by the Japanese culture of mascot motifs, the brand uses illustrations of the Sakura flower (cherry blossom) and stacking plates of the sushi-train to create a sense of playfulness.
The Japanese term 'Yuru-chara' (ゆるキャラ) refers to the use of mascot characters to promote a place, event or business. They are characterized by their kawaii and unsophisticated designs (often clumsy looking), which helps to make a brand feel more personable and friendly.
I created a series of hand drawn illustrations for the Sakura identity that would reflect the casual and playful nature of the venue. The suite included a variety of cheeky looking cherry blossom flowers, sushi related characters, and Ebisu – the god of fishermen and luck.
